Reach & delivery

What is Facebook ad placements?

Ad placements are the specific spots across Meta's apps where your ad can appear — Facebook and Instagram Feeds, Reels, Stories, Marketplace, in-stream video, the Audience Network and more. On Meta you either let Advantage+ placements (formerly automatic placements) spread delivery across all of them, or use manual placements to hand-pick where ads run.

Example

One ad set with Advantage+ placements might serve the same campaign in the Facebook Feed, Instagram Reels, Stories and Marketplace, shifting budget to wherever results come cheapest. Restrict it to Feed only and you often pay a higher CPM, because you've cut off the lower-cost inventory Meta could have used.

Why it matters

Placements directly affect cost: each spot has its own supply, competition and CPM, so letting Meta optimise across all of them usually lowers your average cost per result. Manually narrowing placements shrinks the auction pool Meta can draw from, which tends to raise CPM and slow the learning phase — the extra control often costs more than it's worth.

How to use and improve it

Default to Advantage+ placements so Meta can find the cheapest effective inventory, and give it creative that adapts across aspect ratios (square for Feed, vertical 9:16 for Reels and Stories). Only restrict placements when you have a concrete reason — a format that genuinely breaks somewhere, or placement-level data showing consistent waste — and check the placement breakdown before cutting anything.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main Facebook and Instagram ad placements?

The most-used are the Facebook and Instagram Feeds, Reels, Stories, Marketplace, in-stream (in-video) ads, the right-hand column on desktop, and the Audience Network of partner apps and sites. Meta keeps adding and renaming placements over time.

Should I use automatic (Advantage+) or manual placements?

For most advertisers Advantage+ placements win, because Meta shifts delivery to the cheapest effective inventory and lowers average cost per result. Manual placements make sense only when you have a specific format constraint or clear data showing a placement wastes spend — test against your own account.

Does the Audience Network placement work?

It depends on your goal and account. Audience Network inventory is often cheap but lower-intent, so results vary. Rather than excluding it on reputation, check your placement breakdown and let your own cost-per-result data decide.

Do I need different creative for different placements?

Ideally yes. Feed suits square or 4:5 visuals while Reels and Stories need full-screen vertical 9:16, and text can get cropped in the wrong ratio. Supplying placement-appropriate assets lets Advantage+ placements run everywhere without your ad looking broken.
