What is Ad frequency?

Frequency is the average number of times each person saw your ad over a date range: impressions divided by reach. It is the standard early-warning metric for ad fatigue on Meta.

Formula

Frequency = impressions ÷ reach

Example

12,000 impressions spread across 4,000 people → frequency = 12,000 ÷ 4,000 = 3, meaning the average person saw the ad three times. On a small retargeting audience that number climbs fast, often past 5–6 within days.

Why it matters

As frequency rises, the same people see the same ad repeatedly — CTR drops, CPM and CPA drift up, and returns diminish, even though nothing about your targeting changed. Small audiences (like retargeting pools) hit fatiguing frequency quickly, which is when performance quietly decays.

How to use and improve it

Control frequency by refreshing creative, widening the audience, and setting a frequency cap where appropriate. Watch it alongside CTR — when frequency climbs and CTR falls together, it's time for new creative.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ad frequency on Facebook?

For cold prospecting, roughly 1–2 over a short window is comfortable; retargeting tolerates higher. There's no hard limit — watch for the frequency at which your CTR starts falling and CPA rising.

What frequency is too high?

There's no fixed ceiling, but when rising frequency lines up with declining CTR and climbing CPA, the audience is fatigued and needs fresh creative or a wider pool.

How do I reduce ad frequency?

Add new creative variations, expand or refresh the audience, and use frequency caps on reach-objective campaigns so the same people aren't served the same ad over and over.
