Audiences & targeting
What is Audience overlap?
Audience overlap happens when two or more of your ad sets target many of the same people, so they end up competing against each other in Meta's auction — you effectively bid against yourself, driving up your own costs. On Meta this inflates CPM and CPA, hides which ad set truly performs, and wastes budget, because the platform runs one auction per impression and your own ad sets fight over the same users.
Example
You run three ad sets: a broad interest audience, a lookalike, and a retargeting pool. A cart abandoner who also fits the lookalike sits in two of them, so both ad sets bid to reach that same person — pushing up the price you pay. Meta's Audience Overlap tool might show a 40% overlap between two ad sets, a clear sign they should be merged or separated with exclusions.
Why it matters
Self-competition is a silent budget leak: overlapping ad sets raise your own CPMs, split the data each ad set needs to exit the learning phase, and make performance comparisons meaningless because delivery is decided partly by which of your ad sets won an internal bidding war rather than by which creative is best. It's a classic reason a well-built account underperforms for no obvious reason.
How to use and improve it
Detect overlap with Meta's Audience Overlap tool (in Audiences) — high overlap between two ad sets means they're competing. Fix it by consolidating similar audiences into fewer, larger ad sets (which also helps them leave the learning phase), and by adding exclusions so audiences are mutually exclusive: exclude purchasers from prospecting, exclude your retargeting pool from cold campaigns, and exclude one interest set from another. Broad targeting and Advantage+ reduce overlap because you run fewer, wider ad sets in the first place.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check for audience overlap on Facebook?
Use Meta's Audience Overlap tool in the Audiences section: select two or more audiences and it shows the percentage of people they share. A high overlap between ad sets that run at the same time signals they're competing in the auction.
How much audience overlap is a problem?
There's no hard threshold, but the higher the overlap between two simultaneously-running ad sets, the more they bid against each other. Meaningful overlap between active ad sets is worth fixing; small overlap between audiences that don't run together matters less.
How do I fix audience overlap?
Consolidate similar audiences into fewer, larger ad sets, and use exclusions to make audiences mutually exclusive — exclude buyers from prospecting, exclude retargeting pools from cold campaigns. Broad targeting and Advantage+ also cut overlap by reducing how many separate ad sets you run.
Does audience overlap raise my costs?
Yes. When your own ad sets target the same people, they compete in Meta's auction and push up your CPM and CPA — you're effectively bidding against yourself. Removing overlap usually lowers costs and clarifies which ad set actually performs.
