Calculate your CPM

Your CPM

$5

Below the typical Meta range — cheap reach. Check the audience is still the right one.

You pay $5 for every 1,000 times your ad is shown.

How CPM is calculated

CPM = (ad spend ÷ impressions) × 1,000. If you spend $500 and your ad is shown 100,000 times, your CPM is (500 ÷ 100,000) × 1,000 = $5.00.

It measures the cost of reach, not results — two campaigns with the same CPM can perform very differently once you look at clicks, leads or sales. CPM is best read alongside CTR and cost per result, not on its own.

What is a good CPM?

There is no single number, but as a rough 2026 guide, Facebook and Instagram CPMs commonly land somewhere between about $7 and $15. Instagram and video placements tend to run higher; broad reach or awareness objectives tend to run lower.

CPM varies a lot by country, industry, season and objective — a US ecommerce audience in Q4 is far more expensive than a broad awareness campaign in a smaller market. Treat any benchmark as a starting point and compare against your own account's history.

How to lower your CPM

Broaden narrow audiences — the smaller and more contested an audience, the more you pay to reach it. Let the algorithm find buyers in a wider pool.

Improve creative and relevance — ads people actually engage with are rewarded with cheaper delivery. Fresh, on-brand, native-feeling creative usually beats a tired static image.

Avoid audience overlap and fatigue — running many ad sets against overlapping audiences makes you bid against yourself and pushes CPM up. Consolidate, and refresh creative before frequency climbs.

This is exactly the kind of ongoing tuning Geniusko automates on Meta — watching frequency, overlap and creative fatigue and shifting budget before your CPM quietly drifts up.

Frequently asked questions

What does CPM mean?

CPM stands for cost per mille — the cost per 1,000 impressions (times your ad is shown). It's the standard way to compare the cost of reach across campaigns and platforms.

How do I calculate CPM?

Divide your ad spend by the number of impressions, then multiply by 1,000. For example, $500 spent for 100,000 impressions is a $5.00 CPM. The calculator above does this instantly.

What is a good CPM for Facebook or Instagram ads?

As a rough 2026 guide, Meta CPMs often fall between about $7 and $15, but it varies widely by country, industry, audience and objective. Compare against your own account's history rather than a universal number.

Why did my CPM suddenly go up?

The usual causes are narrow or overlapping audiences, rising ad frequency and creative fatigue, seasonal competition (Q4, sales events), or a change in objective or placement. Broadening the audience and refreshing creative are the fastest fixes.
