Tracking & measurement

What is Standard events (Meta Pixel)?

Standard events are the predefined actions the Meta Pixel and Conversions API recognise — such as Purchase, Lead, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, ViewContent and CompleteRegistration — that you report back to Meta when a visitor does something meaningful. On Meta these named events are what let the algorithm optimise delivery toward the outcome you actually want, measure results, and build audiences.

Example

A shopper adds an item to their basket, so your site fires an AddToCart event; when they pay, it fires a Purchase event with the order value and currency. Meta uses those Purchase signals to find more people likely to buy, to calculate your ROAS, and to build a custom audience of purchasers you can exclude or retarget.

Why it matters

Optimisation is only as good as the events you send: without a correctly firing Purchase or Lead event, Meta can't optimise for conversions, can't report accurate CPA or ROAS, and can't build conversion-based audiences — it's left guessing. Since the iOS privacy changes, sending these events server-side through the Conversions API (deduplicated against the browser pixel) is what recovers the signal the browser now loses, which is why event setup is one of the highest-leverage fixes in an account.

How to use and improve it

Map your key funnel actions to the matching standard events (ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, Purchase, Lead), verify each fires once with the right parameters — value, currency, and content IDs — in Events Manager, then add the Conversions API and deduplicate so browser and server events don't double-count. Prefer the predefined standard events over custom events wherever one fits, since the algorithm understands them best.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between standard events and custom events?

Standard events are Meta's predefined, recognised actions (Purchase, Lead, AddToCart and so on) that the algorithm optimises around directly. Custom events are ones you define for actions with no standard equivalent — useful, but Meta understands standard events better, so use them where one fits.

Which standard events should an e-commerce store send?

At minimum ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout and Purchase, with Purchase carrying value and currency. That chain lets Meta optimise across the funnel and measure ROAS. Lead and CompleteRegistration matter more for lead-gen and signup funnels.

Do standard events work through the Conversions API?

Yes. The same standard events can be sent server-side via the Conversions API as well as through the browser pixel. Sending both and deduplicating them recovers conversions browsers drop and gives Meta the most complete signal to optimise on.

Why isn't Meta optimising for my purchases?

Usually the Purchase event isn't firing correctly — missing, duplicated, or lacking value and currency — so Meta has too little conversion data to optimise on. Check the event in Events Manager, confirm it fires once per sale, and add the Conversions API for reliability.
