Metrics & KPIs
What is Engagement rate?
Engagement rate is the percentage of people who interacted with your ad or post — likes, comments, shares, saves and clicks — out of those who saw it. On Meta (Facebook and Instagram) it measures how compelling your content is, not how many sales it drove, and it feeds Meta's read on creative quality.
Formula
Engagement rate = (total engagements ÷ impressions) × 100
Example
An ad gets 8,000 impressions and 320 engagements (reactions, comments, shares and clicks combined) → engagement rate = (320 ÷ 8,000) × 100 = 4%. If a second creative on the same audience only hits 1.5%, the first hook is resonating far more and deserves the budget.
Why it matters
High engagement signals relevance, and Meta rewards relevant creative with cheaper delivery — so a strong engagement rate usually pulls your CPM and CPC down. It's also a fast early read on a new creative before enough conversions accumulate to judge CPA, letting you spot winners and losers within the first day.
How to use and improve it
Lift engagement with a scroll-stopping first frame, a clear hook in the opening line, and formats people naturally interact with (video, carousels, native-looking content). Test several angles and let the engagement rate flag which creative to scale before your conversion data matures.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good engagement rate for Facebook ads?
It varies widely by format, placement and industry, so there's no universal figure. Judge each creative against your own account's typical engagement and prioritise the ones that clearly outperform your baseline.
What's the difference between engagement rate and CTR?
CTR counts only clicks per impression; engagement rate counts all interactions — reactions, comments, shares, saves and clicks. An ad can have high engagement but low CTR if people react without clicking through.
Does engagement rate affect ad costs?
Indirectly, yes. Meta treats engagement as a relevance signal and tends to deliver engaging ads more cheaply, so lifting engagement often lowers CPM and CPC.
Is engagement rate a vanity metric?
On its own it can be — engagement without conversions doesn't pay the bills. It's most useful as an early creative-quality signal, read alongside CTR, CPA and ROAS rather than in isolation.
