Automation
What is Dynamic product ads (DPA)?
Dynamic product ads (DPA) are Meta ads that automatically pull products from your catalogue and show each viewer the specific items most relevant to them — often the exact product they browsed but didn't buy. Instead of building an ad per product, you set up one template and Meta populates it per person using your catalogue and pixel data.
Example
A shopper views a pair of blue trainers on your store but leaves. A dynamic product ad later shows them those blue trainers — plus a few related items — pulled straight from your catalogue, with live price and image. One campaign covers thousands of products because Meta fills the creative dynamically.
Why it matters
DPAs are the workhorse of e-commerce retargeting: they turn abandoned browsing into personalised, high-intent ads at scale, which usually produces a strong conversion rate and ROAS. They can also prospect against a broad audience, letting Meta match catalogue items to people likely to want them — but they lean entirely on a clean product catalogue and accurate pixel or Conversions API events.
How to use and improve it
Set up a product catalogue in Commerce Manager, verify your pixel fires ViewContent, AddToCart and Purchase with matching product IDs, then build a catalogue-sales campaign. Segment retargeting (viewed vs added-to-cart) from broad prospecting, exclude recent purchasers, and keep the feed accurate so ads never show out-of-stock or mispriced items.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need to run dynamic product ads?
Two things: a product catalogue (usually a feed in Commerce Manager) and a working Meta Pixel or Conversions API sending catalogue-matched events like ViewContent, AddToCart and Purchase. Without accurate product IDs the ads can't match items to people.
What's the difference between dynamic product ads and regular retargeting?
Regular retargeting shows a fixed creative to a warm audience. DPAs auto-populate the creative per person from your catalogue, so each viewer sees the specific products they engaged with — personalised at scale.
Can dynamic product ads be used for prospecting, not just retargeting?
Yes. In 'broad audience' mode Meta matches catalogue products to people likely to be interested even if they've never visited your site, though retargeting warm browsers usually converts more efficiently.
Why are my dynamic product ads not delivering?
The usual causes are catalogue errors (missing images, IDs or availability), a pixel that isn't sending catalogue-matched events, or too small a retargeting audience. Check the catalogue diagnostics and event match quality first.
