Audiences & targeting
What is Advantage+ audience?
Advantage+ audience is Meta's AI-driven audience setting that targets broadly and lets the algorithm find your buyers, using any audiences you provide as suggestions rather than strict limits. On Meta you supply signals — interests, lookalikes, customer lists — as an 'audience suggestion', and Meta prioritises those people first but is free to deliver beyond them if it finds cheaper conversions elsewhere. It is distinct from Advantage+ Shopping, which is a full campaign type, not an audience control.
Example
Instead of locking an ad set to a 1% lookalike of buyers, you enable Advantage+ audience and feed that lookalike in as a suggestion. Meta starts with lookalike-like people but expands to anyone it predicts will convert. On the original (manual) audience setting, delivery would stay inside the lookalike; with Advantage+ audience, that boundary becomes a hint, not a fence.
Why it matters
Advantage+ audience reflects Meta's broader shift away from manual targeting toward AI-chosen delivery, and it often lowers CPA at scale because the algorithm isn't boxed into a narrow, self-limiting audience. The trade-off is control and transparency: you're trusting Meta to find the right people, which works best when your pixel and Conversions API feed it clean conversion signal to learn from — weak tracking makes broad AI targeting far less reliable.
How to use and improve it
Treat your best data as suggestions rather than hard boundaries: feed high-quality lookalikes and customer lists into Advantage+ audience so Meta starts warm, then let it expand. Make sure your pixel and Conversions API send strong conversion events, since that's what the AI optimises against. Test Advantage+ audience head-to-head against your proven manual (original) audience setup and judge on cost per result and MER, not on how the targeting 'feels'. Don't confuse it with Advantage+ Shopping — you can use Advantage+ audience inside an ordinary campaign.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Advantage+ audience and Advantage+ Shopping?
Advantage+ audience is an audience setting inside an ad set that lets Meta target broadly using your inputs as suggestions. Advantage+ Shopping (ASC) is a whole campaign type for e-commerce sales. One controls who's targeted; the other is an entire campaign structure.
What's the difference between Advantage+ audience and a manual (original) audience?
A manual or 'original' audience keeps delivery inside the audience you defined. Advantage+ audience treats your defined audience as a suggestion and lets Meta deliver beyond it when the algorithm finds better results, trading precise control for AI-driven reach.
Do lookalikes and custom audiences still matter with Advantage+ audience?
Yes — but as signals rather than boundaries. Feeding strong lookalikes and customer lists in as audience suggestions gives Meta a better starting point, even though it can expand beyond them. Source quality still influences results.
Is Advantage+ audience better than manual targeting?
It often lowers CPA at scale and reduces manual work, but it gives you less control and insight, and it depends on clean pixel and Conversions API data to work well. Test it against your manual setup rather than switching blindly.
